Sarah's Christmas Cookies

Not long now and I'm very excited and my boys are fit to explode!

The best thing for me this time of year are family traditions of which we have many. From scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on Christmas morning, stockings first with big presents spread throughout the day, a gentle walk on the beach whilst dinner is cooking but before all that come the preparations.

I had my tree up STUPIDLY early this year ... I just couldn't wait any longer for the twinkly lights. Then come the decorations and the cooking. I'm not a good cook but I get by. I love nothing more than rummaging though all of the cookery books that my Mother-in-Law has given me through the years in the vein hope of turning me into a domestic goddess. I often make mistakes but I have fun trying and the kids just love getting messy!

So with this in mind I though I would share a recipe with you (also a good excuse to get my camera out!). A great way to keep those little hands busy and take their mind off of all of the presents under the tree and the chocolates left in the advent calendar. Jim and I made these for his nursery school teacher as a present for the end of the term but they're equally good for a little treat once the schools break up.

Have fun ...

For my Christmas Cookies you will need:

150g plain flour
100g unsalted butter (cubed)
Pinch of salt
75g sugar
Grated zest of 1/2 an orange
One egg yolk
Icing sugar
Any decorations that you fancy

Firstly set your oven on to 180 degrees/gas mark 4.

Pop your flour and butter into a food processor (or get your fingers messy) and whiz it up until you've got fine breadcrumbs. Put in the salt, sugar and zest and give it a stir.Add the egg yolk and pulse until it all starts coming together. Tip it out onto a floured surface and make a ball. Wrap in cling film and pop it in the freezer for 5 minutes or the fridge for a bit longer. Make sure you don't leave it in the freezer too long or it will be crumbly and hard to roll (I speak from experience!).

Line a baking sheet with some greaseproof paper - I usually use a tiny bit of oil or butter on the top just to sure you don't get any sticking. Roll your dough out until it's about 1.5cm thick and cut out your favourite shapes. We used a holly cutter but stars look great - think the play dough fairies had pinched my star cutter, never to be seen again!

Pop your biscuits onto your tray and put them back in the fridge or freezer for a bit to firm (say 5 mins in the freezer). Place into the top of your oven for about 15 minutes until they are lightly golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool on the tray for a few minutes and then pop them on a wire rack to cool totally before you decorate them.

Wrap with ribbon and give with love.

From Bump to Baby

Taking a well deserved break from my editing for 5 minutes to try (!) to catch up with my blogging. So many wonderful sessions that I want to share - some can't be shown as they are surprises and others are queued up ready to be posted. Yes ... I know I've let it slip ... just a bit.

In an attempt to regain your trust and a little of my own self respect here is a session I have wanted to share FOREVER. I first met up with this wonderful couple back when the leaves were still magical in one of my favourite venues - Aberdare Park. I don't do too many maternity sessions so this was a real treat.

There's something truly beautiful about a pregnant woman. There really is a glow. You never see it in yourself at the time but it's there. I only wish that I looked half this spectacular when I was expecting. A couple of my favourites and a little slideshow for your viewing pleasure. If I'd posted all of my favourite images I fear I would have clogged up tinternet.

Play me ...

A few months on and ... ta da! Bump becomes baby - who'd have figured. And he is just perfect (I told you he'd be a boy mum!). A chance to use the vintage 50's pram that I discovered in an antique shop and has been sitting in my office waiting for the perfect opportunity to be used - this was it (yay!).

Thank you so much to mum and dad for allowing me the privilege of capturing this special time. Can't wait to deliver your big art block -it's going to make such a statement in your lovely home.

Just for Fun

Love it or hate it? Facebook that is. Me? I love it. I am in awe of it. It has put me in contact with so many wonderful people over the years. Not only do I thank it for putting me back in contact with the man who has become the love of my life but I am so thankful for the wonderful photographer friends who have become an invaluable support network - especially needed when I work in a profession which can be quite lonesome at times (oh, how I miss a bit of office banter!)

This weekend was a prime example of what I mean. A photographic day organised by the marvelous Claudia Carter and sponsored by Aspire Photographic Training exclusively though Facebook. Twenty five photographers all from different disciplines and with different levels of experience converged on Battersea Park in London for a fashion shoot. No specific agenda other than to meet up and have fun ... and fun it was!

The theme was the snow queen. Think winter ... think Tilda Swinton ... think models in beautiful dresses dressed and styled by a talented team of make up artists and hair stylists. Yum. For me the winter theme took a little bit of a back seat. I just couldn't overlook the wonderful warm light and the autumnal colours - it'd be a waste to make it all cold so I didn't - I went against the grain a bit.

Anyway ... enough of my rambling. Here are my images from the day. A self indulgent mix of different styles, different post processing techniques ... just because it's fun ...

Meet Jim

Meet Jim. Jim is four. In fact he is 4 today and he is my youngest son. If you've been following my blog for a while you will have no doubt seen his cheeky little face pop up from time to time. You can't miss him really ... he's got personality in abundance.

So to mark his very special day (and let's face it's a special day for me too!) I have trawled the Thomas family album to give you, not just an insight into my little fella but to perhaps go some way to explain the dark circles under my eyes. He's an early riser ... he's demanding ... he's an old man in a toddlers body.

He barely tolerates Mummy's camera.

He know's what he wants and often gets it.

He looks super in a hat but it just has to be at a jaunty angle.

He's trouble with a capital T.

He's just like his Mum.

He will always be my baby** and ...

... they will always be everything.

** Many of you will be aware that Jim was born with a cleft lip and palate. It was diagnosed when I was pregnant and he undertook two operations to correct it in the first 6 months of his life. To say this was a hard time would be a massive understatement but the support from the specialists at Morriston Hospital in Swansea and the team at CLAPA was amazing and I still feel indebted to everyone who helped us through this difficult time. Thank you. xx

Newborn Safety Week

This week was the first Newborn Safety Week. Led at the forefront by Stateside Photographers; the aim of the week is to really highlight the safety required when photographing a newborn baby. This is something very close to my heart. I always take the upmost care with my little ones during their sessions. The trend nowadays seems to pose babies in the most awkward positions. Seemingly impossible poses that (although cute) if not constructed in the correct way WILL cause the baby harm. I use the word constructed as that is what these images are. Photoshop is a very clever application - the camera never lies?? Yes ... yes it does. These photos are composites. Please, please don't try this at home.

I tend to avoid such drastic poses as I find my customers prefer something a little more subtle but it scares me that some newbie photographers are out there actually trying these crazy images ... for REAL.

There is a real art to newborn photography. Patience is number one (I have often been called the baby whisperer). You must work slowly and be mindful of the baby at all times. If baby doesn't like being in a certain position then you need to be flexible enough to adapt. I've been doing this a while now and it takes practice - no two babies are ever the same.

On that note ... I have the pleasure of introducing this little fella, one of my most recent newborns. Love his hair ... love his eyes (I'm a sucker for eyes!). He was just brilliant although not at all sleepy - far too much going on.

If you are expecting or know someone who is then I strongly recommend booking your session when in mid to late pregnancy. Sessions slots fill up quickly and ideally your little one should be captured within the first 10 days (preferably earlier) of their new life. Yes I know babies rarely come on time (both of mine kept me waiting over 10 days!) so I offer flexibility around your due date to ensure we get that perfect moment.

Beauty and the Beast

I struggled with what to call this blog post. Beauty and the Beast seemed the most apt but all will become apparent shortly ...

Here's the beauty ... the beauty of photography which enables you to capture that perfect soulful moment ... that wistful gaze ... that beautiful autumn light. Just one snap - one click of the shutter, catching my partner's son unawares whilst walking at Tredegar House.

Now bring on the Beast ... he was excited ... he had a costume ... he had face paint ... he was the scariest boy on the block ... he had too many sweets! I shouldn't really call my son a beast but he can be everso good at it!

This, to me is the power of an image and why I love photography. Although very different, these photographs are the same in so many ways. They don't just capture a moment in time but a feeling. For me this is perhaps my favourite image of my little boy. Not your everyday traditional portrait but it evokes so much emotion in me. It's how he is and I never want to forget these moments.

The moral of my story? Next time you grab your camera try thinking outside the box. Think about what makes moments special, how you want to remember them, the feelings associated with special times. Take pictures of the unexpected. The details, candid moments. You'll have a unique set of images to look back on for a lifetime. Promise.

I Challenge You Not To Smile!

Yes, I seriously and throwing up this challenge to you all. I challenge you to look at the next set of images and not smile - it's impossible. I've tried. Look at the expressions ... check out that eye contact. He's a flippin' marvel!

This session was a delight or should I say two sessions as this little chap was a little unimpressed on our first attempt. On the rare occasion that this happens (and lets face it, babies are anything but predictable), I always offer to return for another go. Sometimes all it takes is another week for them to settle into their routine and I am more than happy to add this to my service. I want all new parents to feel comfortable and enjoy their newborn session. After all these are important, once in a life time images that I am capturing. Anyway ... on with the show. Ready? Go on just try not smiling ...

Always a sheer pleasure to visit my customer's for their viewing session. A fantastic opportunity to narrow down those favourites and design artwork that is 100% what my customers want. We look at decor, available spaces, product and interior design. I totally love wandering around with my tape measure and putting together presentation ideas.

So, what did this lovely family decide to do with their images? I'd love to show you these up in the actual home they will be gracing and I will ask ever so nicely if I can take some images as I am SO EXCITED to deliver these tomorrow. This a mock up of how some of the displays will look. Something I show all of my customers in their viewing sessions - it helps them visualise their images in a proper setting. Simple but it works.

Finally, I would just like to say a BIG thank you to the Mum and Dad of this little chap. You made me smile ... frequently with your gangsta raps and tales of Snoop Dog. I am confident that your beautiful son will actually grow up to be a well rounded individual, however hard you try ;) xx

Cheeky Little Chappy

This week I've mainly been ill ... yep, feeling very sorry for myself. I think I should in fact have been a man as I felt incapable of doing anything this week but press on I must. Any other mums reading this will know that there are no days off - no sickies - no duvet days. Couple this with running a busy business from home then there's no wonder it's taken me almost 2 weeks to shift this darn thing but there's no rest for the wicked! Moan over ... all better now :)

Obviously sessions this week have had to be postponed. I am always very conscious of passing bugs onto little ones and would rather stay away until it's cleared. Gutted as I am not ill very often but I am blessed with very understanding customers. So, this week I have been concentrating on editing, filling up the 2011 diary (only 5 weekend slots left before Christmas!) taking orders and packaging up lots of lovely art blocks and frames. One of the trips to the post office this week contained a disc full of lovely images for the mum and dad of this amazingly cheeky little chappy.

We took a stroll along the canal just outside of their beautiful home one sunny Sunday morning a few weeks back. Although initially a little gobsmacked at the strange lady poking a camera in his face, he soon got into the swing of things and we got some amazing smiles.

This was taken just before dad took a tumble into the canal - joke! Although we had a couple of hairy moments!!

Such a lovely family and a pleasure to work with you. I really look forward to seeing how your little man grows and blossoms.

Farewell My Muse ...

What will I do without my muse? Those of you who have been following me on Facebook and indeed this blog, should be familiar with her face. This little girl has been my inspiration; a willing model who puts up with my frequent 'need' to go out and try something new to keep me on my photographic toes. Does she moan? Nope (clearly not a normal 4 year old!!), she's just brilliant and stunning and fabulous and has spirit and ... I could go on but I won't.

But she's off. Her very selfish Mother (sorry Lorna, I don't mean it!) has made the big decision to move away from Cardiff and I will miss them. They aren't going far really, just the other side of the Severn Bridge (it's a different country and everything) so I will no doubt continue my hassling. There's no way that I'm missing the opportunity to see this little angel grow and blossom.

Simple Pleasures

What single thing reminds you of being a child? For me it's autumn. I grew up very close to the Mendip Hills in Somerset and it was our weekly family tradition, each and every Sunday to shove on our wellies and take in a country walk. The smells and colours of autumn are my most favourite thing. That gentle nip in the air, the earthy smell an that beautiful low light breaking through the trees.

So, last Sunday I dragged the kids out. No more TV, no more Playstation, no complaining - we were going to enjoy some fresh air. Yes it was raining a bit but it's character building right? We hopped in the car and drove for 5 minutes to Cosmeston Country Park. Yes, I know i am SO lucky to live where I do. We fed the ducks and then after spying all of the juicy black fruit we decided that blackberry picking was agenda item number two. I was instantly taken back twenty years (I wish!). Do you know what? It was fun. The kids loved it. So did I.

Back home with a bag full to the brim and purple stained fingers to show for our efforts. With culinary inspiration to rival Nigella Lawson, I whipped up a quick apple crumble (with able assistance from mini Thomas) and proudly added our treasure.

I just had to share this with anyone who takes the time to read this blog (and thank you by the way). This day made me remember that it's the simple things in life which bring the most pleasure. It doesn't cost anything and it is priceless. I think we might have found our own family tradition for the new Thomas generation.

It might seem odd but on days like this I like to leave my camera at home. I want to enjoy the moment rather than view it through a lens. Pictures taken by my partner with my very favourite iPhone App - Shake it Photo. Seriously, give it a whirl - I just love it!!

New Found Love

Well, I'm back. Back with sand in my shoes and a new found love in my heart. Not only for the spectacular company of my traveling companion but for the the sight, smells and people of Thailand. Never have I visited such a welcoming country. People with such a passion for their home and a genuine desire to ensure that each and every person visiting leaves with a longing to return.

I could continue to gush but will hold back (for now). So many pictures to edit but they will have to wait for a while as the Christmas rush has certainly started. Lots of calls to make and bookings to arrange for October and November - the slots are already filling up fast. Thank you to everyone who left me messages whilst I was away. I am slowly getting through them and will call you all back within the next 24 hours to arrange your session.

I will post more images shortly and I promise not to bore you with endless images of Buddha and golden temples (although they were SPECTACULAR!). I am after all a people photographer and there was no shortage of fascinating faces, full of life to meet my photographic hunger. Thank you to everyone I met along the way and for my ever patient partner for allowing me a little photographic self indulgence.

So, that's it for a bit. I'm off for some gentle R & R for a couple of weeks. A welcome break after a busy summer and an opportunity to refuel my batteries for what looks to be a busy pre-Christmas season.

Pre-Christmas sessions take place in September, October and November only to ensure delivery of all artwork before the big day. September is now fully booked and I will be taking bookings for the rest of the year upon my return on the 4th September.

That Magic Sparkle

This is a people business - there's no doubt about that. I love the interaction I have with all manner of models, both parents and children. It so makes up for working by myself and the longing I have for the banter of an office life long gone. These relationships are crucial - not only for my sanity but for my business. You have to be natural. You have to be you. People buy from people at the end of the day and that's always at the forefront of my mind. What really makes my day is not only that people recommend me to their friends but when customers come back for more. It's a bit like a domino effect - the longer I am in business the busier I get - can't complain in fact THANK YOU!!

I first photographed this family back in August 2009 not long after the arrival of beautiful son number two into the household. I was struck, even then by the pure cheekiness (in a good way) of both of the kids. I totally love kids with strong characters. I love a challenge. It keeps me on my toes. Just check out their eyes in the images below - they've got that magic sparkle - LOVE IT!

For session number two we tried something a little different and headed off to a local park in Newport early on a Saturday morning before it got too busy. Great location, great kids, weather - hmmm, bit wet but nothing we couldn't deal with.

Thank you so much to Mum & Dad for being such sports with this session. I had a blast and the kids had me in stitches. A few of my favourites to end the week ...

My Secret Obsession

I am addicted. I have realised recently that I am totally obsessed with finding locations and more importantly ... light.

I had a bit of a light bulb moment last weekend whilst parking up to visit the Big Cheese in Caerphilly (if you've never been then you don't know what you're missing!). One of the perks (all be it small) of my partner working in Caerphilly is that we had a secret place to park. As we pulled into the underground parking area, the hairs on the back of my neck began to prickle. My other half thought I was a little crazy. "But I park here every day and I've never noticed it!". Yeah, but it's my job to notice things like this ...

So on the way back from almost 3 hours of fairground rides and ice cream, I spent just 5 minutes playing with my ad hoc model (bless him, he was brilliant although I am sure he thought me a little mad!). I need to go back ... with my speedlights ... I've not even started to explore this location. Little things excite me ... sad I know.

Under the Boardwalk

Now for the second part of my recent photo weekend. Day two was to be a more gentle affair. After all, day one was a bit frantic and we were all totally exhausted. I decided that a relaxing stroll along the pier was in order. If you've never been to Penarth Pier then I urge you to do so. It is the most beautiful of Victorian landmarks and (for me) just perfect for photo sessions.

Today's models were a great family that I had the pleasure to photograph last year. Not only are they all stunning but they are naturals with the camera - perfect for my visiting photographer friends to get their hands on.

Yet again, I didn't photograph too much. I preferred to sit and chat to mum whilst looking after the bags of kit scattered over the pier. After all, I've photographed on the pier LOADS of times. I already had lots of great images of these children. It was new and exciting for my visitors but my portfolio is full to bulging with these types of images. But ... I had a plan. I often get pictures in my head. I knew EXACTLY what I want to shoot. I wanted to go under the pier with the eldest of the family - a stunning almost 15 year old. I could envisage something funky using the beautiful diffused light and the textured surroundings.

Photographing older children (or should I say young adults) is always a pleasure for me. I capture so many babies and toddlers that it's always refreshing to try something a little different. A bit more funky. A touch more urban and hip.

Clicks, Chicks and Chardonnay

One of the best things EVER about my job has been the wonderful people I have met along the way. Through social media sites such as Flickr and Facebook I have been lucky enough to become acquainted with a bunch of like minded photographers. We share, we laugh and we support each other. If we've had a bad day we pick each other up. We share hints and tips and we moan. Yep that's right ... we moan. Sometimes when you work on your own you miss someone to whine too - just as a way of venting frustrations and getting it all out of your system. It's all generally better then.

Problem is, all of my bestest buddies are up north (and Guilford, sorry Kate). We speak daily but rarely get together. A virtual relationship is all very well but there isn't anything better than the real thing. So, many months ago I threw open an invitation to the lovely ladies to come to Cardiff for a weekend of photos, cake and ultimately just a little wine to ease our aching bones. It can be hard work running after kids you know. The main aim of the weekend though was to allow the ladies to get some cracking images for their portfolios. I gathered models, props and took them to some of my most favourite locations.

One of the best things about events like this is that you can shoot for yourself. The pressure is off. You can be a touch more creative than you would usually be. You can play and experiment. It keeps you fresh. It keeps you creative. It's fun! Really fun!

This is the first blog post to document the day. I didn't shoot that much - I felt an overwhelming responsibility to make everything run smoothly - but I got a few that I was happy with and the girls all seemed to have a ball (even though I did burn the chicken wings!). Much more to follow but here are a few of mine from our evening session at the meadow.

In a world of my own

I am a very lucky girl. I am blessed to have a partner who not only puts up with my constant gabbing about cameras but to have one who's actually interested. Yes, he's genuinely fascinated with what I do. So much so that on a recent sunny afternoon (yes, there has been at least one!), he asked whether he could come along to a session to see what I do. After checking with my customer, he took a seat in a local field and watched as the session unfolded. I didn't feel that uncomfortable as I tend to throw myself into things and forget all else and my little model was such a pro that she wasn't even aware that we had an extra pair of eyes! We traipsed through corn fields, we picked buttercups and played hide and seek in the local church grounds. It was fun. Lots of fun.

After the session we said our goodbyes and headed to a local watering hole for a quiet drink (I wholeheartedly recommend the Newbridge on Usk). As we sat by the riverside watching the salmon gracefully leaping out of the water and I picked sheafs of wheat out of my hair, I asked him what he thought. His response surprised me. He was totally unprepared in regards to how personal the session was. How I was totally engrossed in building a relationship with my model that nothing else really mattered to an extent that he almost felt (sort of) uncomfortable. I'd never really thought about it like that but he's right (for once). So for now on I will continue on my lonesome until I can encourage him to carry my ever so girly yellow camera bag and to train him to hold a reflector!

I loved this session ... thank you so much to my beautiful little model and her ever patient mum for standing in those windy fields of corn!! ;)

Design for Life

When I started out in this industry I had no confidence - yep, I'll admit it ... I was scared. Scared that people wouldn't like my work. Scared that I'd make mistakes.

So what did I do? Well, I ventured out (excuse the pun), producing images that I thought people wanted. Back then it was the white and black backdrops - the contemporary studio look which was so 'in vogue'. I do think I still gave it my 'take' but was it totally original? Did it show off what I love most about my work ... the kids, their personalities and unique characters? Hmm, maybe not as much as I would have liked.

As my confidence built it soon dawned on me that parents were opting for this look because they didn't realise there were other options - that's what there is so that's what they'll have. I set out to show parents that you could get creative and natural shots that were still funky and fresh whilst at the same time getting service and not having to take out a second mortgage in the process. I spend a long time building up my portfolio which is an ongoing organic process - it has to be. I find most people are visual animals ... well they kinds of people who book me tend to be. They need to see ideas. they need visual inspiration.

Today, I am delighted when my customers are not only creative and open to my suggestions but those who know exactly what they want me to achieve down to pre-planning the rooms for display and co-ordinating their clothing choices with their decor. Many of my customers come to me with cuttings from publications such as Junior magazine - full of excitement and inspiration.

How things have moved on and how I look forward to being challenged to come up with fresh new ideas for the future. My head is spinning ... it's all very exciting.

It was this very session that prompted this post.

I love this family, they were one of my first customers back in the day when I did shoot against very plain backdrops in customers homes. I don't do that (apart from with newborns) anymore but this customer had very specific ideas about what she wanted. Now with their second child (who I wanted to eat by the way!) they wanted to match the style of images that I captured for their first son. They knew exactly what they wanted to do with the images, they knew how they wanted them to look and where they were going to put it etc. etc. etc. How could I say no?

Yep ... you guessed it ... this was the one they decided to go big with and it looks amazing. This was the first session I did with my new camera, the Nikon D700 and I'm totally delighted with the results.

Although I love getting out and about and rolling on the grass ... there is something about these images that I love. I think it's the graphic and simple style but it just could be his twinkly eyes ... I'm a sucker for twinkly eyes.

Simply Love

I often wonder whether holidays are a little counter productive. Yes, a break is good but the mountains of work that you often return to leave you longing for yet another break. Well at least I've returned to glorious weather and my tan isn't fading into obscurity ... not!

Anyway, much blogging to catch up on and I thought I would start with some images of pure love. I was privileged to visit this wonderful family in a beautiful small town close to Abergavenny a few weeks back. Their beautiful home was the perfect backdrop for some intimate images of their precious new arrival.

What I totally love about these images is the pure love that is so evident - natural, un-staged emotion.

I am so looking forward to seeing how this little one grows and simply can not wait for her 6 month and 1 year session which are already scheduled. Such an honour to be a small part in the history of this lovely family ...

A Gift of Love

Have I told you lately that I love what I do? It fills me with so much joy ... don't get me wrong, it can be tough. You have to have the patience of a saint at times and if you're squeamish about bogies, dribble or other unmentionables then it's just not the job for you. You have to wear lots of hats ... I have learnt over the years how to sing the Wheels on the Bus very well (almost in tune) whilst simultaneously checking my camera settings and keeping an eye out for that perfect shot.

Sometimes, something comes along which really pops the icing on the cake and makes my job even more enjoyable. Like when a very loyal customer decides that one of my vouchers would make the perfect gift for one of her oldest friends. Such a kind thought and a truly unique gift. That friend turned out to be such a lovely person who I clicked with almost immediately. She also had THE most terrific baby ... I mean totally lush in every way ... I wanted to eat him up but that would have just been a bit wrong really.

Do you see what I mean? Isn't he the most adorable little man? Broody? Me? Nooooo. Well maybe just a little bit ... shhhhh, don't tell anyone.

I just know that you're new canvases will look totally perfect in your stunning home and I am privileged to have been able to produce images worthy of the gift of love from such a wonderful friend.

91 Years Young

Today I met Ted. Ted plucked my number from the telephone directory and I count myself very lucky that he did so. He proudly told me that he is 91 and 3 months old (that'll be about 90 years older than I'm used to then!). He is a second world war veteran and wanted me to capture some images of him with his beret and treasured medals - could I help? You bet. I was very honoured to be asked.

Ted was called up to serve his country in June 1940 when he was just 20 years old. Throughout the war he served 6 years active service in the western desert of North Africa then to Italy where he progressed with his regiment, the Queens Bays, into Austria and finally to the border of Munich at which time the war ended.

I loved hearing his stories. He recalled his duty with so much affection. He told me that enjoyed it but felt uncomfortable saying so. To Ted it was all about the people ... the comradeship ... the experiences that they all shared ...

What really struck me was that when most men are out enjoying the early part of their adulthood, discovering themselves and having fun, Ted was fighting for his country. He told me he wondered whether he would have turned out to be a different person had he had an opportunity to lead a 'normal' life in his formative years. No doubt he would have but different is not necessarily better.

I had a truly wonderful afternoon with perhaps one of the nicest people I have met in a long time. Bright, sparky, funny and totally fascinating. You can not fail to be humbled when you meet a person such as Ted. He really is 91 years young.

Daddy Cool { Happy Fathers Day }

My Dad often annoys the pants off me … go on admit it yours does the same to you right? I think it’s given as read that parents are put on this planet to test your mortal soul. I honestly don’t think you’re being a proper parent unless you are embarrassing the life out of your kids. I must admit to a sense of evil satisfaction to be able to (finally) be able to master this fully with my 11 year old. It’s sport.

As a kid, all of my Dad’s little quirks (of which he has many) really irritated me. Playing his awful music very loud, making me sit down and actually listen to his favourite songs whilst explaining to me the nuances of Jimi Hendrix’s masterful guitar techniques. His obsession with comic books. He would sit and go through piles and piles of them whilst trying so hard to explain that the artwork was out of this world. BORING!

I am now older … much older. Age and experience now makes me reminisce on these times with great affection. Those awful songs are now my favourites. Those silly little comics are now treasures of graphic art. My Dad has never been what I would consider a ‘normal’ Father, he just let me get on with my life in his characteristic laid back fashion. What I am trying to say is that, without knowing it, my Dad really has impacted on my life and my loves. What I failed to realise at the time is that he has subtly shaped me into the woman and Mother that I am today.

So, on this Father’s day I wanted to celebrate my Dad. You may be a little on the quirky side but hey … like Father like Daughter. Thanks Dad.

Driftwood and Nostalgia - Anne Morgan Contemporary Jewellery

I don't plan to ramble tonight (phew I hear you cry) but I just had to share the results of my afternoon playing with pretty things and I mean SERIOUSLY PRETTY! Actually pretty is the wrong word... beautiful, spectacular, sculptural, tactile - that's better.

You see, I have a friend called Anne Morgan who is super talented. She is a jewellery maker who I know best for her skilled work as a silversmith. Imagine my surprise and delight to be faced with a batch of the most eclectic and unique jewellery I have ever seen with not a great deal of silver in sight. To me this collection is all about treasure. Remember finding a little stone on the beach as a child and making it into a necklace or those wonderful bits of polished glass that looked like gems (I kept mine in a jar for years!). Nostalgia and stunning craftsmanship - could any girl ask for more?

I so wish that I wore more jewellery as I'd clear Anne's workshop in a Cardiff second but alas ... apart from a treasured (very simple and understated) necklace, it just doesn't work for me. i have been compared to a man in drag when wearing dangly ear rings ... lets just (aahhherm!) leave it at that and move on to the pictures ...

And finally ... the woman herself. Sorry Anne. It's such a lovely picture of you (even if I do say so myself!) that I had to share it ;) You can get me back later.

This is a very brave post for me. I’ve been thinking long and hard about this blog of late and have decided that I would really like to open up and express more about me and my life – what goes on behind the camera not just the images I create. You may consider this a little egotistical but - no. Firstly I am anything but egotistical (more on this later) but I think that this whole photography game is more than taking pictures. People trust in me to capture images of their loved ones – they are not going to pick just anyone (I sure wouldn’t) and I want to be able to show a bit more about who I am so people can make a more informed decision – you may hate me but at least we’ve got that out of the way first and you can move on! I also want to dispel the myth that this is a glamorous game. Some photographers build up these uber persona’s – like mini celebrities. Trust me readers … this just aint me. I am Mrs. Normal from Normal Town.

Problem is this dear friends … in order to properly introduce myself to you I will have to show you pictures of me. I hate pictures of me. Truthfully I despise every picture that has ever been taken. All I ever see is those extra few wrinkles that have popped out of nowhere, the fact that I really should not have indulged in that extra chocolate biscuit, that nasty crease in my forehead that is looking more and more like a bottom every day, the fact that I’m not girly and have capable hands … I could go on but I think you get the picture. Also figuring out just who you are is hard. Have you ever tried? What makes you tick? Try it – honestly it’s tough. I’ve been going through lots of changes recently in my life and I’m not completely sure I’ve figured it out yet but putting it down on paper might just be a good start.

For this project I wanted to get some pictures that were just me. No frills, no special Photoshop treatments – pure and simple. Well that sums me up really. I called upon my very good friend Kate Griffin. I love Kate so much. We met online some years ago and I was romanced by her clever wit and amazing literary talents – oh and she can take a cracking picture too. You have to visit her website – no, no, no – visit her blog. It’s totally marvellous. Her way with words is spectacular and I challenge you not to smile or even shed a tear at her posts. Magic! When I found out she was travelling to Wales from her home in Surrey a few weeks back, I was just a bit excited!! I actually did a little dance - really, I did!

The Venue? Hay-on-Wye. Nestled on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park this is a real gem of a place. If you like books then you will be in heaven (Kate was!). If you like to pootle around lovely little gift shops selling lots of things you just don’t need then you just might explode with joy (I nearly did!). Watching Kate as she picked out little pockets of light and experiencing, first hand all of her clever tricks was priceless. Thank you Kate – I know I was a nightmare.

Right so let’s get on with this. Exactly who is Sarah Thomas. Well …

Firstly, I get excited very easily and when I do I talk! Oh, I talk lots and I talk fast. I also do this when I am nervous. This can often result in me saying things without thinking. This can be just a bit of an issue.

Secondly, I get bored ... quickly. My mind flits from one thing to another and I do things on impulse often. I think this is a creative mind thing - or that's my excuse anyway. This impulsive behaviour can often result in expensive purchases of camera equipment. Hang on … is that the UPS man I can hear knocking on the door – oops.

Thirdly ... I’m not shy, not really. Not when I’m faced with a situation that makes me feel confident. Photo shoots bring out the best in me. I don’t seem to have any insecurities – I go for it. Some customers have thought me a little mad but I figure if I get the results ...

Next ... I’m nice. Yes, really I am. It's not necessarily a good thing. I’m too nice. I like people – simple. I will talk to anyone and often do. I like to be liked and I hate to disappoint or purposely upset people.

And finally – well I’m just normal. Your everyday woman of a certain age (we don’t talk about the birthday looming next year!) who loves her boys more than life itself. Someone who feels blessed to be making a living out of something she whole heartedly loves to do. I’m messy, insecure, excitable, frivolous and at times loud but I’m happy and I’m loved.

Memories { Penarth Child Photography }

Having kids does something to your memory ... at times mine is truly awful. If you're a mum then you'll empathise I am sure. Saying that, I have a good knack of remembering my sessions, my clients and their children's names. I suppose it's because I totally throw myself in to each session, spend such time with them and then take my time studying their lovely little faces to get the pictures just so! But this session will stay with me much longer for a few VERY good reasons.

Firstly ...

... Upon arrival, I had banter with Grandad. I like banter. We were due to take some images in the garden but the mower had broken and he had popped out to buy a new one. I secretly think that the old one was broken 'accidentally on purpose' so he could have a new toy but don't tell anyone! This was a very good start. This was going to be fun!

Secondly ...

... Well just look at this face.

And finally ...

... I always go back to my customers to help them choose their favourite images, show you products and discuss displays. When did I choose to do this ordering session? At 10.30am on Royal Wedding Day. So, when my grandchildren ask me where I was when William and Catherine married, I will proudly say ... sat on the floor of a customers house drinking coffee and ooohing and ahhhing over that stunning dress.

In at the Deep End { Fashion at the Victoria Baths, Manchester)

If you hadn't already realised, I am totally in LOVE with photography in fact many would call me a bit of a camera geek ... but it's more than that. Photography for me is not just about capturing people but meeting the most incredible individuals who make my job ... well, not feel like a job (does that make sense?). Customers who trust in me to capture their most treasured memories and fellow photographers who have supported me along the journey and continue to make such a difference in my life ... thank you.

Right, gushing over and on with the show. And what a show it was! When I found out that the very talented Jo Rutherford was arranging a workshop in the Victoria Baths in Manchester I just knew I couldn't miss it. Check out the venue and you'll see why. The Victoria Baths is an abandoned swimming pool in the centre of the city which is being painstakingly restored by a dedicated group of volunteers. You may recognise it from the BBC TV programme Restoration and also as the backdrop to shows such as Life on Mars. This wasn't just any venue - this was special and not the type of place that is readily available for photo sessions. I HAD to be there.

The workshop itself (as with all of Jo's events) was not a training day. It was the chance to get together with like minded people to play, experiment and just have fun. If I'm honest, this type of photography does not come naturally to me. Give me a bunch of kids and a camera and I am in my element but fashion models - gulp! I knew that my usual tricks were going to have to take the back burner for the day - not sure they'd appreciate the mouse who lives inside my camera (sorry Bob!) or my extensive catalogue of classic kids nursery rhymes.

Enough chat and on with the images. I wanted to really make the most of the venue. I wanted to show the contrast between the flawless models against the gritty environment. I wanted images that evoked high fashion. I wanted to test myself. My Dad always used to say "I want doesn't get". Hopefully I've proved him wrong ...

I am so pleased with the results from the day but these final images are my favourites. I never tire of looking at the simple, timeless beauty of Florence. Who'd have thought it was her first modeling assignment. I'd love to think that I've captured a star in the making.

I Love Bread & Jam in the Early Evening Sun

I am often asked, "What is the best time of day to do a photo shoot?". When working on location in the summer the answer always has to be early in the morning of last thing in the afternoon ... why? Well, the light ... it's everything, especially in the summer and, crikey we've been having some wonderful weather at the moment haven't we? Is this really April??

Honestly, there is nothing worse than shooting in the middle of the day when the harsh sun makes people squint and the light is SO unflattering. My advice is always to go for a time when the sun is low - that golden hour just before the sun sets is perhaps my favourite time of the day to capture portraits. Yes, this is often when children are not at their best but a quick afternoon nap often sorts out that problem and keeping them busy with lots playing and exploring does the trick too.

Let me show you what I mean ... Unseasonably I got the opportunity to visit one of my favourite spots a couple of weeks ago with 3 wonderful little girls. This was the final shoot for the fashion company Bread & Jam (if you haven't already checked out their dresses ... DO!). It was an impromptu affair. A last minute call to get down to the meadow. It had been a wonderfully sunny day and I just knew the light would be perfect. Picnic? Check. Dresses? Check. Stylist? Check (thanks again Lorna, you are marvelous).

I knew the look I wanted for this session - it'd been swimming around in my head for weeks. It had to be something that evoked the feel of the summer. Those days when you can still feel the heat of the days sun on your skin. It had to be playful. It had to be innocent with a touch of vintage thrown in for good measure ...

Yes, it's true. I have an unhealthy obsession with vintage cameras. To me they are just things of total beauty.

What child could resist such a fantastic den? We had great fun just playing around to get those natural playful shots that I craved. Tea anyone?

They ran, they twirled, they were themselves.

That's a wrap! Lying back on the picnic blanket - exhausted after rolling around on the floor, I just knew I had the shots I wanted in my camera. It didn't feel like work. A nice chilled out evening in a deserted meadow with friends and carrot cake ... perfect.

When Simplicity is Best { South Wales Newborn Photography }

I never tire of newborn sessions. Being able to capture all of those beautiful baby details, the sparkly eyes and the sleepy essence of a newborn baby never fails to get me excited. It's such a special time and so lovely to be invited into my customer's homes to share such a special moment in those hectic first few weeks.

I totally loved this session. I adore the simplicity of the images that we produced on the day. Baby was totally marvelous and her big sister was full of so many stories and just wanted to help and ask questions - a girl after my own heart. Here are just a few of my favourites ...

Three Years in the Life ...

I've been running my business for about 4 years now and I'm not going to lie to you, it's been a real roller coaster ride. It's very easy when you are starting out to think that it's going to be easy - you can take a decent photo and people like what you do. A bit of advertising and you'll have a thriving business ... simple. Being a photographer can seem like a very glamourous job but what people don't see is everything that goes on behind the scenes. Yes, you need to be a good photographer but you need to be constantly learning and developing your skills both behind the camera and in the digital darkroom. Then there's all of the business elements ... accountancy, networking, marketing, pricing, legalities, exceeding customer expectations and ultimately attracting more customers. You need to wear many hats in this game.

Sometimes, something happens that really pulls everything into focus (excuse the pun). I got a bit emotional this week. You see, I have a customer who has been with me since almost the very beginning. Whilst putting together a collection of images captured from all of her sessions over the past 3 years it hit me! I am so lucky to do what I do. I am so privileged to be able to capture, not only images of children but to document such a special time in the history of a family. Let me explain ...

Back in 2008, I first met a new family with their beautiful newborn daughter. One of my first newborn sessions and they were delighted with the images in fact I think they bought every image!

Roll on to 2009. and we decided to go to a local park to capture their baby as she turned one. Not the smiliest of days but a memorable one non the less.

And now - 2011. That little baby that so gracefully allowed me to poke and prod her when she was a newborn has turned into the most beautiful toddler. This time we opted for something a little more natural and captured her at play in her home - you've got to LOVE the fairy wings.

And the icing on the cake? I go to meet her stunning baby sister too.

I am so grateful to be invited to revisit families such as this, to capture images that they truly love and capture their children as they really are. It really is an honour and it makes all of the hard work worth while. Not only am I able to see a family growing but also it's a lovely record of the way I have evolved in my work and photographic style!

Cardiff Family Photography { When words just aren't enough }

It’s not long now ... April the 3rd to be precise – put it in the diary if you haven’t already. Mothers Day. One of those Hallmark moments created solely to benefit retail outlets everywhere or is this one just a little bit special?

As a mum myself I would have to say that it’s the latter. It wasn’t until I had my own children that I realised that perhaps, just perhaps that I could have made a bit more of an effort to show my mum how special she really is.

Being a mum is hard (honest dad’s it really is). You work, cook, clean, play dressing up, sing songs (even if you don’t sound like Adele - I like to think I do), cheer them up when they are feeling down – even when you don’t want to do anything else than have a cuppa and a big bar of chocolate in peace. Then, time flies by and before you know it they get bigger and it’s a whole different kettle of fish. Emotions run high and we end up being both mediators and agony aunts. Why do we do it? Why do we put in that extra effort? It’s because they are a little bit of us and we love them – unconditionally.

So, does a bunch of daffs, a card and even lunch (if she’s lucky) say enough? Does it really show how much you appreciate what she’s done for you and continues to do?

I spend loads of my "mummy time" playgroups and waiting at the nursery gates on the school run. I chat to mums and overhear other people’s conversations. The topic? Their children. I used to think that there must be other things to talk about but there is no shame is saying that our kids are our lives. We’re proud, why not tell the world?
So this Mothers Day, whether for your wife, mother or grandmother, take a moment to think about what she would really treasure. Beautiful portraits of the one’s she loves is a truly unique way to say thank you for all of those little things that have made such a big difference to you and your family.

Meet Bob ...

Some of you may have had the pleasure of meeting Bob before ... although he's a little nervous around grown ups. They're just SO big!

You see, Bob lives inside my camera. He likes it in there ... it's warm, he meets tons of people and he gets to see some really good stuff. Want to see him? Well he only comes out for good girls & boys. If you are very patient and have a good look inside, you just might see him ... you have too look hard though. He especially loves it if you give him a nice smile.

We're firm friends, Bob and I. He comes to all of my sessions and keeps me company whilst I'm traveling around South Wales. I would be lost with out him :)

My Muse

My children are SO sick of having their picture taken. My eldest asks for money (£5 if it's not going on my website and £10 if it is - you've just got to respect his business skills!) and my youngest screams and runs away. Great! Who to call on ... ahhh. This little girl is probably my most favourite child to photograph, it helps that she is the daughter of one of my loveliest friends, Lorna. She's the clever lady who is helping me style some recent sessions. Could this three year old girl really be my muse?

I had a free afternoon today and needed a bit more of a photography fix (even though i spent the morning on a newborn baby shoot!). I really wanted to practice using off camera flash techniques with children - I wanted something dramatic and a touch grungy. Luckily Lorna understood what I wanted to do and off we popped to an abandoned housing estate in Penarth. Don't worry, this isn't the type of location I usually take my clients. Safety is the name of the game ... always ... but on this occasion, why not?

Quite a contrast to the newborn photographs I captured this morning but variety is the spice of life isn't it? Thank you to my little muse for being so patient and for Lorna for being open minded enough to indulge me in something just a little bit different.

Creativity and business … they should go hand in had but rarely do. In any business it is very easy to get stuck in a routine of offering the same service or product because, after all that’s what your customers want, right? It’s safe. That’s what sells.

This way of thinking has not sat well with me of late. Is it right to accept that all customers don't want anything different? Just a few years ago it was the norm that all you could expect from a children’s photo session was a white backdrop in a high street studio. Fashions and tastes changed and many photographers (including myself) started to offer a more natural approach. For me as the owner of a small creative business it is important not to stand still; I want to offer my customers variety. Something new. A choice. Don’t get me wrong – I love nothing more than the simplicity of getting out there with just a bunch of kids and my camera, capturing the natural character and simple joy of childhood. I’m good at it (nothing wrong about blowing your own trumpet now and again!) and the feedback from my customers is nothing other than positive. I do, however aim to constantly stay fresh in what is becoming an increasingly competitive market.

This was the motivation for my latest project - to produce images that were a little different from the norm. I wanted to be really challenged. My inspiration was fashion; you know the kinds of images you might see in Junior Magazine or in boutique stores. I wanted to use my creative skills and my many years of experience of working with children to try something just a little different – but I couldn’t do this alone.

That’s when I found these FANTASTIC dresses from I Love Bread & Jam. They were different, like my idea. Using the most unique fabric designs, they offer an innocent quirkiness whilst retaining the wholesome goodness of childhood – totally perfect! Luckily the wonderful ladies at Bread & Jam were on my wavelength and loved my portfolio. A little bit of email tennis and behold – a bundle of ten beautiful dresses landed on my doorstep!

I have been so lucky to forge a relationship with a wonderful stylist, Lorna Sylvester Walton. She has the most amazing creative eye and just gets me (this is rare!). She’s the kind of person who puts things together that shouldn’t work but do, sickening hey? Just check out her tree and you’ll understand – pure genius.

This is the first of two posts with images from session one as there are so many to choose from. The girls were all so great!

Lorna and I will be working together on this project of 3 shoots in total; all with very different styling and over all feel. We also hope to work together in the future to offer styling on customer sessions but that’s a whole other blog post – watch this space!

South Wales Baby Photography { just PERFECT }

There is SO much happening at SJTP HQ at the moment. it's all very exciting and will have a big announcement very soon!! In the meantime I wanted to share some images with you from a recent newborn session ...

I was very excited to visit this little chap. He was the beautiful bump in one of my recent maternity sessions and he's just as beautiful in the flesh!!! We had to wait a little longer than the usual 2 weeks to do the session but it was well worth the wait.

Because we waited a little longer to do this session, this little fella had broken out in a nasty milk rash. This is one of the many reason to do a newborn session earlier rather than later. These things can be fixed with the wonder of photoshop, if necessary and with all of the recent press about airbrushing, I thought that this might be a perfect opportunity to show you a before and after.

Yes, I correct blemishes! I like to make EVERY picture that I show my customers perfect. This doesn't mean that I take away the natural beauty of the child but the camera has a nasty habit of showing up any imperfections that might not be as apparent to the human eye. Toddlers often have dark circles under their eyes and don't even get me started on spots, scrams and (my favourite) the runny nose!!! Do I have to do this? The answer is NO and many photographers would not invest the time. I am (I'm afraid) a perfectionist. I invest a great deal of time giving each and every one of my images that extra special touch so your children look the way that you see them - PERFECT! This is one of the differences of booking a custom photographer over a high street chain - it's the little extra attention to detail that they can not offer.

Bring on the Trumpets

It's taken me a while but I'm a bit of a perfectionist really. I've wanted to refresh my website for a while now; there was nothing wrong with the old one really, in fact I often get so much positive feedback on the way it looks and it's simplicity.

But one thing really began to bug me. I'm an Apple user, in fact a little bit of a self-confessed addict. I have an iPhone, I have an iPad (for work purposes only you must understand) and I was not able to view my website on either device. Flash + Apple is not a winning combination!! So I set about trying to solve this problem, I simply didn't want potential viewers to hit a brick wall when they tried to view my site.

Finally ... ta da (bring on the trumpets!)! Here it is in all it's glory.

Those who have seen the website already have said that it's so "me". This pleased me as that was exactly what I wanted; a site which reflected my style and my work. I wanted clean, simple, easy to use and a site which was all about the images.

The feature that I love us the Kind Words page. It acts like a guestbook where viewers can leave testimonials or comments about my work - pop over and try it out!

But best of all I LOVE the fact that it can be viewed on all devices, trust me I've checked and shed a few tears over this one.

There's even a cool iPhone version so you can even check out the website on the move and clients can even view images from their sessions too.

So just pick the viewing platform you want from the main splash page and off you go. To be honest the Flash (or desktop) site is still the funkiest with the slick slideshows but, finally I feel that I have it just exactly how I want it.

So, if you've got a couple of minutes why not have a look. I'd love to know what you think.

Now For Something Completely Different

As a photographer, (well in any profession or even your personal life) I think it is crucial to take yourself out of your comfort zone every once in a while. It keeps you on your toes and forces you into difficult or often uncomfortable situations which you are forced to face and overcome. That pretty much sums up my weekend.

When the very talented Jo Rutherford contacted me to let me know that she was going to organise a girls weekend in Southport which would consist of cake, wine, models and photography, well I just couldn't say no - all of my very favourite things. The weekend was focused on people who are either starting out in photography or perhaps are looking to develop to the next stage in their business. I was very flattered to be asked to present to the group, telling them a little more about how I do things and hopefully sparking a few new ideas.

The best thing about this event for me was that there was no pressure. Often on photographic training courses it can take a very techie route. It can often be very competitive and all about who's got the best camera and most expensive kit. It was refreshing to be in an environment which was all about sharing and trying new things out - just being creative and developing confidence in photography.

I can not be grateful enough to everyone who attended for making this simply a fun weekend. For me, taking pictures of, not just grown ups but professional models was such a departure from my usual work. Pushing myself to try something totally different has taught me so much and I am delighted with the resulting images.

South Wales Newborn Photography { welcome to the world }

Dear me, I've been neglecting this blog of late. The New Year has been much busier than I anticipated and I've been hard at work designing my new website (to be launched very soon!).

Let's get back into the swing of things and show you a few images from my first newborn session of the year. I first photographed this lovely family last year to celebrate their daughter's first birthday. Now, it was my pleasure to capture the newest addition to the family - a lovely bouncing baby boy (I didn't try bouncing him you understand - he was just chunky and cuddly!!).

Got to try out another one of my new hats too - just love this one ...

And my most favourite shot from the session!! He was SO good and just placed his hand on his cheek as I pressed the shutter - what a pro!

And finally ... just because it makes me smile. Welcome to the world little one.

Give a Little Something Back in 2011

So, what resolutions have you made this New Year? I hope everyone had a great time over the holiday season but if you are anything like me then this is the perfect time for some self-reflection - dusting out those closets and making a fresh start.

I had an email this morning from a great lady from Penarth who asked if I would be able to help her fundraise for her chosen charity by donating a raffle prize - happy to oblige, especially for such a good cause.

Rachel Dickens from Penarth is running the Virgin London Marathon this year, something I would love to be able to do but never have. After completing the Cardiff Half Marathon in October she has bitten the bullet and thrown herself, full throttle into this world famous event. Rachel running in aid of the UK charity, Shelter who do some amazing work with people who are homeless and suffering as a result of bad housing.

Rachel says, "More than 71,000 children in the UK woke up this Christmas in temporary accommodation, which I feel is unacceptable!

"I work for a community mental health team in Barry and see the first hand the difficulties faced by people in poor accommodation and it's sad to say that most are affected by some form of disability. "

I like to support local charities as much as I can but Rachel's story really hit home as I too have some experience of working with disadvantaged communities and know how hard it is to fundraise, especially in these hard times. I am proud to say that I have completed two treks in the last few years, one to Sri Lanka where we helped Tsunami victims rebuild their community and the other, an arduous trek through the Andes in Peru - raising almost £6,000 on the way.

So, the moral of my story? In this New Year, when you are making all those promises to yourself and looking for a 'new you', why not consider what you can do to give a little something back. Whether that is sponsoring someone, pushing themselves to raise money for a good cause or even challenging yourself to do something spectacular to help those in need.

South Wales Family Photography { A Year in Pictures }

Well there we are - another year done and dusted. Last packages are in the post as I sit here keeping my fingers crossed that the couriers can get to my customers in time for the big day - curse you snow!!!

2010 has been a WONDERFUL year for Sarah J. Thomas Photography. I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the most fantastic families and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them. Not only have my customers made my job so rewarding and enjoyable but they continue to act as ambassadors, spreading the word amongst their friends. Thank you, it means so much to me.

I thought I would end the year with a quick slideshow of some of my favourite images from the past 12 months. It was a VERY hard task - trust me you could be watching a slideshow that rivals Gone With the Wind in length!! I hope you enjoy the show ...

Cardiff Baby Photography { How to get THAT perfect shot }

I write this post whilst knee deep in tissue, wrapping paper and boxes. "Wrapping presents, how organised!" I hear you cry. Nope, just putting the finishing touches to the final pre-Christmas orders for my customers - the kids will just have to wait a couple more days. It's so satisfying getting out all of the pieces of art and prints at this time of year and the thought that so many people will be opening up my images on Christmas morning never fails to leave me with a warm glow - I'm just a big softy at heart.

Back to some images. I must say, I LOVED this session. Not only was this little girl a joy to work with but Mum was fun too and so open to my (sometimes whacky) suggestions. We started indoors and then headed out to Victoria Park to try and capture the last of the autumn leaves.

And finally one of my most favourite shots of the session and possibly the whole of the autumn season. That slightly amazed and quizzical look on her face is the result of me barking like a dog (honestly)! The things I do to get THAT perfect shot. I sure get some looks, I can tell you but it's worth it.

Thanks again to Mum for making this such a fun session, I talked far too much I know! I really hope that your Christmas gifts create the same reaction they did for you upon seeing them for the fist time - have a great time :)

Cardiff Family Photography { Fun in the Leaves }

Gosh, I'm behind on this old blogging business at the moment. So many lovely family sessions to showcase, a girl doesn't even know where to start. I thought I would start with a session I've wanted to shout about for a while and some gentle autumnal sunshine is just what I need right now as I can't feel my toes and my fingers are so numb that I can hardly type :(

We met in Thompson Park in Cardiff one Saturday morning. The girls were great and SO creative. The eldest of the two spent sometime giving me the synopsis of her impending novel whilst her younger sister entertained me with a conversation about Harry Potter.

The best bit about sessions for me is taking the kids off on their own (if that's OK with Mum and Dad) for a chat to relax them whilst I take some candid shots which capture their natural personalities and avoiding unwelcome forced smiles. Cheese? No thanks!

We finished the session off by calling Mum and Dad away from their game of frisbee for some family shots. I just LOVE these images - to me it just shows the natural fun of this family.

Cardiff Natural Light Child Photography { Let it Snow! }

As I sit at my desk in my office watching the snowflakes floating down outside my window, I am feeling inspired to do a quick post on shooting sessions in bad weather. Yes, we live in Great Britain and the weather is predictably unpredictable!

Many people that I speak to often think that as I am a natural light photographer that when the weather takes a turn for the worse that the opportunities for beautiful and natural images are limited. This couldn't be further from the truth. Yes, if you want those shots in the leaves or a summer meadow then the weather plays a HUGE part in capturing the best shots but don't discount the wonderful images that can result from an indoors shoot.

You don't need a big posh house, it doesn't need to be totally tidy and look like a showroom (mine sure doesn't!). All we need is a light room, nice natural diffused light from a window and a willing model. These shots were taken in the little girl's bedroom on her bed. Bedrooms are typically great, especially if you have neutral walls and white bedding.

You don't need anything fussy for sessions indoors in fact keeping it simple is so much better - keeping the focus on your child and avoiding unnecessary distractions.

The following shots were taken on a VERY dull day but we just moved in closer to the window, using every last drop of natural light for some really natural and intimate shots.

So, the moral of my post? Don't let the bad weather put you off booking a photo session. There are so may other possibilities available.

South Wales Child Photographer { The Look That Says it All }

I've seen lots of familiar faces this year and especially in the mad run up to Christmas. I met up with one of the nicest couples I have met in a long time for the second session with their little boy who I first me almost a year ago to the day.

Mum was frantic when I arrived, "He's not slept or eaten and I'm pulling my hair out!". Oh, how I've heard that before. Kids!? Unpredictable? Oh, YES! I decided to make myself at home and sat down with Dad to discuss the finer points of Batman movies as Mum rallied round gathering together outfits and props - this was going to be fun!

Up at Cwm Darren Park it soon became apparent that not only would it be fun but blooming cold to boot. My little model was very willing until he realised how cold his little hands were and protested VERY strongly. Remedy? Whilst carrying him to a more sheltered spot I blew hot air down his sleeves - she shoots, she scores!

Anyway - so nice to see this family again and I hope you've thawed out nicely. Plowing through the editing as we speak but had to post this one as it makes me smile each and every time I look at it. The look says it all.

Penarth Family Photography { Dark Morning, Much Brighter }

It was dark and wet - VERY dark and wet on the day that I visited a fantastic family who I have had the pleasure of knowing for sometime. The reason for my visit was to finally meet their newest arrival - certainly worth the wait as she was so lovely. The inclement weather meant we had to pick our locations carefully, making the most of the available light in the house.

Thankfully Mum was quite happy for me to wander about her home to find the perfect locations for the session. I am totally in love with these pink images - could it be because I have a house full of boys?!

It's so lovely to be able to mix a newborn session with pictures of older brothers and sisters - it really makes a difference as they feel totally included in the fun - I just LOVE these images.

Thanks for a great morning. It might have been dark and miserable but your children certainly left me with a HUGE smile on my face :)

I would have to place myself in that camp too as the popularity for lifestyle portraiture is much more prevalent in the States, resulting in better resources, products and advice shared freely between peers. Although I feel thankful to have developed a fantastic network of fellow UK photographers over the years, I was very pleased to stumble across the Photographers Boutique blog. My Little Man

My little man. We've been through ups and downs over his first three years. Jimmy T (as he likes to be called) was born with a cleft lip and palate three years ago today. The trauma of having to endure two operations whilst he was such a small baby still plays on my heart. I think myself very lucky that we weren't faced with anything more life threatening and I am full of admiration for those parents that have to deal with more serious illnesses and conditions.

Thankfully he is a totally healthy little man who keeps me on my toes with his endless questions, chitter chatter and outstanding dancing skills (obviously gets that from his mum!).

Casting Call { REAL people wanted for an exciting new project }

I have had an idea in my head for some time now, you know one of those ideas that just won't go away. Well I've decided to bite the bullet and launch my new (and very exciting) project in 2011. I do, however need your help.

I need models. Not models in the sense you think I mean (no super skinny waifs, do they really exist anyway) but I am looking for REAL people. You know, people like you and me.

I am ideally looking for people with a story. Maybe you have had a life changing experience, started a successful business, battled an illness, met the man of your dreams. The list is endless. The project will eventually be supporting Breast Cancer Awareness with a proportion of the session fee going to support their fantastic work. So, if you have battled breast cancer or know someone who has then I would especially like to hear from you.

Young, old, voluptuous or petite, it matters not. You maybe have a group of girlfriends who would enjoy a touch of pampering for an hour or so. You may even be a couple who are up for some original ideas.

All I will say is that this will not be your usual point, say cheese and shoot session - that's just not the way I work. I want to create images that show the real you, your real expressions and your personality. You need to be comfortable with a bit of creativity and happy to go with my (what may seem like odd) ideas. I will say now, for the record, "I HATE HAVING MY PHOTO TAKEN" so I will be gentle with you, promise.

So, what's in it for you? I will not charge you a bean, not one single one. I will post all of your edited images online after the session and you can pick your favourite 2 images to have as digital files. You must be happy for me to use the images in my portfolio and website (you will need to sign a model release form). All of the sessions will take place in South Wales so you must either live in the area or be happy to travel.

I am also looking for a make-up artist and hairdresser in South Wales who might be interested in assisting in this new project - if you know anyone then please send them my way.

South Wales Child Photography { Pretty in Pink }

Day of babies today. I just love newborns - that new baby smell never fails to spark those maternal (even broody) feelings. On any newborn session I always seek the best natural light in the house and I really struck gold (or should I say pink} this afternoon. Big sister (who you might recognise from my promo postcards) had the most beautiful pink bedroom with an abundance of soft afternoon sunshine so we based ourselves here for a couple of hours to capture the newest arrival to the family.

One year on and this little girl just gets prettier and prettier!

So nice to meet this family again at such a special time - she may not have been too sleepy but I know you will be pleased with the results! x

South Wales Family Photography { What to Wear }

Back from my short break and all geared up for the last couple of months of 2010. Love this time of year, however exhausting it is it's a fantastic time to shoot portraits and I always feel like Santa when I go out and about delivering all of the wonderful products in time for the season of giving.

Thought I would start back with a series of images designed to inspire you before your session. The most frequently asked question I am always asked is "What on earth should we wear?". I would never suggest you go out and invest in brand new outfits for your session; it's always better to look like you rather than putting on crisp new clothes that perhaps might not reflect your (or your child's) style or personality. It is however sometimes helpful to have a pointer in the right direction in regards to co-ordinating outfits and accessorising with items that you probably already have in your wardrobe, especially in regards to sibling or family sessions.

So sit back and have a look at some of these wonderful combinations. Look at the colour theme running through each grouping, the use of textures and patterns and the way accessories are used to really finish it all off. I just LOVE accessories!!

Penarth Child Photography { Beautiful Blue Eyes }

Kept it local this morning which was a refreshing change as I have been just about everywhere in South Wales over the last couple of weeks. This may also account for my lack of blog posts as I have had trouble finding the time to post sneak peeks and updates. Decided to keep it simple this morning with 2 of the most beautiful little girls I know, just look at those beautiful blue eyes and you will certainly agree. We simply took advantage the great light and the backdrop of their beautiful home to capture those natural expressions - and OH there were plenty on offer today!

A sneaky peek for Mum before I head out of the country for sunnier climes (there was ICE on my car this morning!) for ten days of much needed relaxation before the rest of the pre-Christmas season kicks in. My Little Star!

You may remember a while back I ran a contest to find a Little Star. The winner was picked by the public via Facebook and it was an amazing success. Over 800 votes in total, an astounding 207 of those were votes for one boy in particular - my little star of 2010!

After a few chats with Mum we arranged to meet half way between their home in Carmarthenshire and my home in Cardiff - Swansea seemed to be the perfect place.

I can honestly say that this little chap certainly is a star! He was so cool and calm for a 3 year old. We played hide and seek, a bit of footie, leaf throwing (all be it a bit soggy!) and finally over to the beach for some treasure hunting.

Mum and Dad were super organised with about a trillion outfit changes which was just as well as we all got a bit muddy round the edges. Congratulations little man for coming in first place - you certainly proved that you are a very worthy winner.

" No! THIS is how you do it!"

Big sister came along too for some moral support. I love shooting teens and she was absolutely amazing with the camera.

My Little Apprentice

I don't remember when I held my first camera - maybe about eight years old?? I didn't come from a particularly 'arty' family, certainly not one that was into photography. My enduring memories of family photographs always included my mum's thumb carefully inserted in front of the lens or wonky, out-of focus holiday snaps. Do you know, it didn't matter. Those photographs still document my childhood however badly composed and haphazard!

It always feels like a bit of a busmans holiday when I take my camera out with the kids. Don't get me wrong, I love capturing them but they don't act naturally, basically I think they may be sick of it. Solution? Let your 2 year old loose with your camera. With mum close at hand he snapped away quite happily - lots of shots of grass, his big brother, mum and a strange fascination with my new camera bag (well it is lovely).

All those hours of watching mum have obviously paid off and I am a little worried about the competition ;) Think I may just put my feet up in the future and let him take the family snaps shots - not a thumb in sight!

Well, Christmas looks like it is coming fast and the season when I am at my busiest is well and truly here. A busy weekend ahead with a party tomorrow afternoon with one of my favourite little girls, a baby session with a little chap who I first photographed earlier this year as a newborn (can't wait to see how he's grown!), theatre making at the Wales Millennium Centre with Mini Make and Do and viewings scattered in for good measure - phew!

This morning was a much more chilled out affair. Only 6 weeks old and she was so relaxed and a natural with the camera once she had figured out who the silly lady was sticking a big black thing in her face. It was such a dark and gloomy morning (will the rain ever stop?) so we settled into the spare room, taking full advantage of the of natural light coming through the window.

Sometimes simple is best and decided to leave the bowls and baskets in the car, instead concentrating on those wonderful eyes and that funky hair!

South Wales Maternity Photography { They met in a Sweet Factory }

They met in a sweet factory - how cool is that? They had their wedding night in St. David's Hotel & Spa - cooler? Cool but nah. They asked me to shoot a maternity session in the same hotel - very cool (for me). The hotel gave me a suite (or should I say sweet, sorry for the pun) for the afternoon - sub zero!

I must say that I felt like a bit of a rock star photographer when I opened the door on my afternoon shooting location and I'm pretty sure Mum and Dad-to-be felt the same! Wonderful light, sumptuous furniture and a fantastic couple all added up to a fun filled afternoon.

Mum and Dad-to-be booked my popular Bump to Baby Package and I can't wait for the privilege of capturing their little one when he comes into the world.

Little 'Freddie' - can't wait to photograph him when he arrives in December.

Couldn't resist incorporating the architecture of this beautiful building. It makes me go WOW each and every time I visit!

South Wales Baby Photography { Prop-tastic }

Goodness, I've neglected this blog over the last week. It's been a busy old time what with the Facebook Contest, booking the diary up for Christmas, getting orders together and I've got the builders in revamping what will eventually be my lovely new office (ehh herm - playroom).

Spent the weekend over on home turf. I'm a Somerset girl at heart although luckily have lost my accent after 12 years in sunny Wales. I do however slip back into old habits if I spend too long over there and am sure I have a touch of the Wurzels sneaking back in - must deal with that pretty sharpish!!

Let's talk props - I love them and have to admit to being a little addicted to rummaging for vintage goodies to use in my sessions. So, when I had the chance to do some early morning scavenging at a quaint little antiques centre in Chedder, I just couldn't resist - credit card? Check. Space in the boot of my car? Check. Look what I found ...

A 1950's toy pram - isn't it lovely?? It needs a bit of a tidy up but perfect for a newborn or toddler session. I might in fact save it for a very special session coming up with my new baby niece who is due any day - hurry up and arrive so I can photograph you!!!

However much I love a bit of vintage; when I turned up on Friday at the most simply stunning house I just knew that the props could stay put in the car. Beautiful furniture, sumptuous colours and fabrics, period features, gilt frames; every detail thought through with so much care and attention. I decided then and there to move in! Thanks to mum for a great session, baby was marvelous (although he didn't want to sleep!) and thanks for letting me gush unashamedly about your beautiful home. A couple of previews while I edit the rest :)

Little Star Contest 2010

South Wales Family Photography { Barry Island? Tidy! }

Barry Island - love it or hate it; it's one of my favourite locations for a funky photo sessions with older children and families. We arrived at 6pm, just as the lifeguards were going home and the holiday makers packing up after a day of sun, sand, sea and ice cream.

This session was a gift from an uncle who was looking for a unique gift for his niece. She was apparently dramatic by nature and a bit of a star so I just knew we were going to have some fun.

Accompanied by her older brother and sister; we ventured to my favourite 'secret' spots and ended the session on the deserted beach save a few seagulls looking for some tasty late evening snacks.

With a memory card full of great shots and sand in my shoes, I headed home to an evening of X-Factor (yes, I am sad!) and the odd glass of wine. The end to a great day.

South Wales Child Photography { Changing Seasons }

Well that looks like Summer all over and done with for another year! The kids are almost back to school so it's time to look forward to Autumn. It has to be my favourite time of year to shoot locations sessions. Crisp mornings, beautiful low light, colourful wooly hats and wellies and best of all - fallen leaves in the most beautiful colours imaginable.

It can be a little unpredictable weather-wise but I am quite happy to reschedule if it's tipping down with rain. Apart from that, other weather conditions don't really cause too much of a problem. It doesn't need to be sunny in fact a nice overcast day is perfect for those bright colours to really POP!

It really is the colours and textures of this season which make it a wonderful time for me to photograph little ones ...

And everyone has so much fun, getting messy in the leaves ...

Now really is the time to think about booking a session before Christmas (sorry but it is). September and October are filling up fast and pre-Christmas sessions finish at the end of November (December will be dedicated to newborns and maternity sessions exclusively). Facebook ... hmmm. You either love it or hate it - personally I like it but it changes so often that I don't know if I'm coming or going. I have a great FB page with 320 followers but the mistake made when I set it up was to use a personal profile rather than a business page.

Now there are rumblings that Facebook are deleting these accounts without notice. Not wanting this to happen prompted me to compose a new page and encourage my current fans to follow me to my new home.

Cardiff Child Photography { Take 2 Girls ... }

Take two girls, a summer meadow in the late evening sun and a more clothes and props than you can ever imagine. Mix them together and here are some of the results. Very much a girly session with lots of dressing up and even a tea party to end the session - think the mums enjoyed it just as much as the girls :)

Such a shame that I don't get to photograph this age as much as I would like - so many babies and toddlers filling my diary at the moment so it was great to be able to direct the girls a little more than I would usually be able to. Saying that, they really knew exactly what they wanted to do and what they wanted to wear!

Back to School

It's nice to get back into the classroom every now and then and Saturday was one of those rare (quite self indulgent) occasions. I enrolled on a day course at Chapter Arts Centre with Ffotogallery which was focused on the art of photographing people and the history of portraiture. A morning spent discussing paintings and photographs led to an afternoon of practical work which turned out to be great fun and a nice departure from my usual work. Thanks to my wonderful model for a very entertaining afternoon!

Penarth Child Photography { sweet light }

It struck me last weekend that there are so many fantastic locations in South Wales; many right on your doorstep that you can so easily take for granted. I live in Penarth with it's fantastic pebbly beach and the wonderful Victorian pier - how often do I visit it? Not as often as I should.

My weekend sessions put pay to that as I took an early morning paddle (quite literally) with a fab toddler who was just so amazed by the littlest things (WOW! was the word of the morning). The light is so wonderful at this time of the day and we had the beach and the pier to ourselves. He took off his shoes and just had a good old run around as I followed with my camera in tow, feeding bread to the fish and throwing pebbles in the sea.

Much later the same day, I ventured over to the other side of Penarth for a session with a family that I first photographed about 18 months ago. We took a back road to Cosmeston Park which I had no idea existed. We passed farms and fields as the children pointed out their favourite bridges, benches and farm animals (dad had a keen eye on one goose in particular!). Again, late in the day is fantastic for soft, sweet low light - if your kids are happy to venture out early evening then I really recommend it.

Brecon Baby Photography { Pure & Simple }

It was one of the sunniest days of the year when I photographed the September wedding of a fantastic couple in Trecastle. Ten months on and I had the privilege of revisiting them for a very special session - to welcome their baby son into the world. These are some of my favourites from the session - nice and simple ...

Can't even bring my self to say it ... but

I am very reluctant to think about the seasonal event that happens in December each year (you see, I can’t even bring my self to say the word!) as the sun is still shining (sort of), the BBQ still smoking with the lingering smell of burnt sausages lingering in the air.

It will however creep up on us before we know it and no doubt the chap in the big red suit is already doing his warm up exercises in anticipation of his annual jaunt.

September, October and November are the busiest times of year for any photographer and, however reluctant I am to mention it; I am already taking bookings for October and even November.

Sessions are limited to four per week over this period so that I can offer the same quality of images and service that my customers expect and they fill up quickly. If you would like to secure a session in time for that seasonal event that involves turkey and crackers then drop me a line or give me a call. No need to specify an exact date and time; simply give me a rough idea and we can firm it up closer to the time – that way you session is secure and will avoid disappointment.

Keep Khan and Carry On { The Mongol Rally 2010 }

On the 24th July this year, Darren and Dave Evans are setting off, from near London, in a 1.2 litre Fiesta with no support or back up, on an epic adventure, all for charity as part of the Mongol Rally 2010!

10,000 miles and a third of the way around the earth, from Europe to Mongolia via a plethora of countries most people haven't heard of in a car that has an engine with no bigger than 1 litre. Starting from England, Spain and Italy, the rally finishes in the Mongolian capital Ulaan Baatar around four weeks and a whole heap of adventure later.

Their mission is to raise as much money as possible for the Christina Noble Children's Foundation. The CNCF is an International Partnership of people dedicated to serving underprivileged children with the hope of helping each child maximize their life potential. Their programmes in Vietnam and Mongolia seek to protect children at risk of economic and sexual exploitation, while ensuring these and other children in need have access to basic care and educational opportunities.

Such an exciting adventure and such a noble cause - I had to show my support, even in a small way. So, I made a donation and they VERY kindly popped a sticker on their car. Very proud that my little logo will be traveling all that way and very envious of all of the amazing sites it will see and the adventures to be had. Well Hung { It's all in the Presentation }

Following each and every session I have the privilege of showing my customers their edited images in the comfort of their own home. So much more relaxed that dragging the kids to a studio where you often feel pressured into buying more than you intended. I love showing people their images and the reaction I get really makes my day. I have often had tears - happy tears I hasten to add.

These viewing sessions are a great opportunity for my customers to pick their favourite images, view my range of product samples and decide the best place within their home to showcase their portraits. I will get the tape measure out, crop and present how the finished artwork will look before placing the order - ensuring very happy customers indeed.

The most frequently asked question from customers is always about their presentation ideas, wall display, image grouping and the best position in their home to place their images. With this in mind I have come up with a selection of wall display templates to assist in visualising the finished results. These templates can be tailored to suit any combination of any images and I just LOVE them!

South Wales Baby Photography { Meet the Twins }

I've wanted to photograph twins for ages so when I was approached via my Facebook Page by someone expecting two bundles of joy I was most excited!

Newborns are hard to photograph and unpredictable little things. Through my experience of photographing countless newborns over the last few years (along with my experience as a mum) I have many tricks and methods to settle babies to ensure the session runs smoothly - add another baby into the mix and you never can tell what's going to happen! I must say they were great babies and each had such a different character, even at such a young age and mum kept me fueled with coffee and chocolate biscuits too. It was a long session but we managed to get some great shots in the end, I even got a soaking - twice!

Penarth Family Photography { More Six }

Do you know, I think my sessions are a bit like buses - I will long for older children and along come two in the same day and likewise newborn sessions all seem to come in at the same time too - odd!

Enough of my rambling ... This session was touch and go yesterday. After various nervous texts and calls between myself and mum we decided it was worth risking that the grey clouds would shift. It paid off and was a stunning evening and SO hot. Cosmeston was the destination and we surprisingly managed to avoid the crowds in fields a bit off the beaten track.

Like I said, more six. Lots of chatting about Clone Wars, Austin Powers and finally, girlfriends was in order to get some more relaxed facial expressions. Perfect example below at the mention of girls :)

Let's not forget the bouncing baby brother. Four months old and full of character ...

And last but certainly not least - Willie the Pug but images of this little monster will have to wait for the moment whilst I re-build my energy this really was a session the kept me on my toes! Cardiff Family Photography { One, Six and Eight }

No, not my PIN code but the ages of the children I photographed yesterday morning! Early on this sunny Saturday morning I ventured into the heart of Cardiff only to find the most secluded little community, quietly tucked away from the hustle and bustle - a real hidden gem. First off was an image of the youngest member of the family. Soon to celebrate his first birthday, he was happy to pose on the crisp white bed linen as the morning light streamed through the window.

Next out into the square for some family images, getting the older boys in on the action. There are so may things more interesting to do when you are six and this cheeky little chap just loved the funny faces - don't worry mum there are others; this one just made me smile.

I Heart the Valleys! { South Wales Location Photography }

I love the Valleys! There are so many little places to discover if you take the time and, in my case have a dodgy Sat Nav! On my way back from my session yesterday evening in Trelewis, I was directed through the most fantastic tree shaded roads; through bendy lanes and discovered the most beautiful cottages, streams, bridges and aqueducts. Bliss.

Anyway, on with some pictures! As I said, Trelewis was the setting. A great little park with lakes and pretty wild flowers at the end of a long and sunny day. Late afternoon / early evening is a lovely time to shoot. The light is great as it is low in the sky, unfortunately though it doesn't always suit little models as they are well past their best and ready for their PJ's. Not in this case, she was great and we even managed a few costume changes from her vast wardrobe!

Penarth Family Photography { One Year On }

When I woke up this morning I took a sharp intake of breath - RAIN! Not an idea situation if you have two location sessions booked with toddlers. To my relief it cleared up but still took along a couple of bin bags and a waterproof blanket to be on the safe side - luckily they stayed in my bag!

I first met this little chap a year ago and the results are some of my favourite newborn images to date.

Now he is just over one year old and full of beans. He certainly kept me on my toes as we did a session with 4 generations of the same family at The Museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans.

Another weekend of babies over (for now) and what a corker it was. This little chap was the latest edition to a great family I had pleasure of photographing last autumn. He had the most amazing head of hair that it was a shame to pop a hat on his head but he did look super cute when I did!

At 11 weeks old he was so aware of everything going on around him but he was a real pleasure to work with and, as usual mum and dad made me feel super welcome. Thanks guys for such a great session - hope you like the images.

Newborn Photography { Take 2 )

Newborn babies can be unpredictable little things. Sometimes they settle and are happy to be photographed and sometimes it's just not their cup of tea. For this little beauty it was certainly the first of these two options so, I popped back for a second go this morning.

What a difference a couple of weeks has made! We had fun trying out a few different props and even managed the rings on the toes but unfortunately my camera was far too noisy and after one click they were kicked straight back off again :)

This will be my last blog post for a week or so as I have a couple of big projects looming which are going to keep me VERY busy indeed. I thought that I would start my period of "missing in action" with a couple of images taken on the weekend. My boys had just got out of the bath and were having a good old jump around on my bed. I grabbed my camera, excited that I might just get some elusive pictures of the two of them together - they did not disappoint.

Pretty in Pink { Cardiff Baby Photography }

Been a busy week this week and today I trotted off (first thing) to Cardiff for another beautiful baby session. This family were a referral from their next door neighbours (quite literally) who I photographed some months ago. Managed to catch up with them after the session and, oh how she's grown!

Pink was the name of the game today. The pretty pink blanket perfectly set off those rosebud lips and rosy cheeks. Thanks to mum and dad for the coffee and the chat as we waited for her to settle ...

One of the things I love about both being a mum and a photographer is that I meet the most amazingly creative people. I spent the this morning having a long old chat to Shelley who runs Mini Make & Do. She runs craft sessions and parties for children and has the most fantastic ideas about developing creativity in little ones and just having fun - so refreshing. We are hopefully joining forces shortly to run a really fun event in Penarth ... watch this space.

I had the pleasure of photographing Emma around 18 months ago when she was pregnant and had the privilege of capturing images of her son just a few days after he was born. Emma has a real talent and makes the most stunning jewellery. When asked to take some images to promote her venture I just jumped at the chance. Her work is so intricate and tactile, no wonder she is getting so many commissions for weddings and her custom designs. Having spent the afternoon touching and feeling, I have an order as long as my arm! Spike { South Wales Baby Photography }

Just back from a lovely morning in Glynneath with 'Spike' and her mum. This little stunner has earned her affectionate title due to the wonderful crop of curls on the top of her head (see below). It's little things like this that are easy to forget as they grow and develop in the first year. She was wide awake during the session and seemed to enjoy watching all of the goings on and pulling the most hilarious faces at the 'silly lady with the camera'. My New Baby

This photography lark can be an expensive old business but I think it's important to stay on top of the new equipment available, ensuring the best quality images. I took delivery of my most recent investment yesterday, a top quality Nikon lens and I was most excited to take it for a spin. Just a couple of images taken in the garden last night show straight away the crystal clear quality of the images. These are straight out of the camera, no Photoshop, nothing - I can't wait to use it on client sessions this weekend!

These are a few shots of my grubby little monster - for once he was quite happy to pose. Perhaps he could see how excited I was to try out my new toy.

Fashion Walkabout

There's nothing better than a morning in the company of a beautiful model with my camera in tow. Quite a departure from my usual work but I find it refreshing to keep my finger on the pulse, taking myself out of my usual comfort zone. It ended up to be a great portfolio building session for both myself and my very sympathetic model - great fun!!

Caught in Action { South Wales Baby Photography }

I am not one for being in front of the camera - I just hate it but when one of my recent clients sent me some images of me in action, I just had to share.

This little one was a slightly older than my usual newborns at around 12 weeks. She was so good and very co-operative with a little help from a squeaky bumble bee! These images give you a good idea of a typical baby set up in your home. This was set up in their very beautiful kitchen diner which was blessed with fantastically huge glass doors, letting in the most beautiful light.

Depending on the individual I will either set up a mini 'studio' or even incorporate the home surroundings in the image. I always bring my prop stash along with me, including custom made hats, beautiful blankets, baskets, bowls and even the odd vintage suitcase. More often than not parents also have items of sentimental value which can usually be incorporated to create a truly original image.

As a mum myself I often find it a challenge finding new and original things to entertain my children. Penarth is full of some fantastic playgroups which is a great way to build social circles (both for mum and toddler!) but every once in a while we long for something just a bit different.

Splodgers is based in The Art Department on Tennyson Road in Penarth. It's a great community arts centre offering courses for adults and children alike - a real hidden jem. Popped along with child and camera in tow this morning to capture young creative geniuses at work ...

I am not a wedding photographer but when given the opportunity to capture my nieghbours big day, I just jumped at the chance. Then reality hit home - they were getting married in Dan Yr Ogof! Taking photographs in a cave is enough to turn the most seasoned wedding photographer to stone. Many sleepless nights followed and armed with my hefty flash and (plenty of spare batteries) I followed the guests into the heart (quite literally) of the South Wales valleys. Such a beautiful intimate ceremony in such a majestic venue ...

When things don't quite go to plan ...

Spent a lovely afternoon in Cowbridge with a lovely family and their 2 week old baby girl. We were all organised; I had bought new props and mum even had a list of all of the poses she wanted to capture (just love clients like that), all set. Mum and dad told me that once baby was asleep there was no waking her so was ready for some really creative images...

She settled quite easily after a feed and a cuddle from mum but as soon as she went down she woke again, wriggling all over the place with her lovely long fingers and toes :)

More cuddles from mum and we tried again ... and again ... and again.

Finally we moved to the bedroom, abandoning the props, hats and blankets in the hope that something a little more simple would and familiar would do the trick - it worked to an extent and we managed to get some very peaceful images.

After 3 hours we got some shots but (as always) when a baby just refuses to settle, I always offer to come back another day to try again. After all, babies are unpredictable little creatures :) Thanks to mum and dad for making me feel so welcome in their home and also their patience this afternoon, hope you like this sneaky peek.

Grab yourself a bargain { Penarth BATS Nearly New Sale }

On the 24th April I had the pleasure of attending the bi-annual BATS Nearly New Sale in Penarth.

BATS provides support and friendship for mums, dads and carers of babies and toddlers in the Penarth area. The activities and events throughout the year allow local parents to make friends, meet people and have fun with their children, as well as raise money for local children's causes, distributed through their grants scheme.

These sales have become quite infamous and people travel from all over South Wales to grab a bargain. I met so many great people on the day, handed out some very special vouchers and ran a prize draw for a £100 session voucher. The lucky winner was Mrs. S. Hill from Treforrest - congratulations!! Thanks to all of the hardworking volunteers who made me feel so welcome. Here are a few images from the day ...

Hidden Roath Park ( Cardiff Family Photography }

I've been to Roath Park so many times but have never explored the top end (or bottom depending on which way you look at it!). It really is such a fantastic spot and great for kids to have a bit of a run around. It's just like a mini wood and SO much quieter than the other part.

I first photographed this family back in October of last year. This time I had the pleasure of meeting more of the family, capturing a shot of the grandchildren for a very special birthday coming up soon. I couldn't resist posting these of the smallest of the clan - a true star!

When you have the gift of a newborn baby, it's so easy to forget all of the little things that change so rapidly. Peeling skin on tiny toes, wrinkly fingers, that first downy hair that disappears too fast. These are some of my favourite things about photographing newborns and another reason why it is best to capture them within the first 2 weeks of their life. Most of my newborns are booked in mid to late pregnancy as slots fill up quite quickly ....
